| New York State Employees' Retirement System The New York State Employee's Retirement System (ERS) was created through legislation in 1921 to provide benefits for State Civil Service officers and employees. By 1923, several counties, cities, towns and villages became participating employers. Southern Westchester BOCES is a participating member of this system. New York State Teachers' Retirement System The New York State Teacher's Retirement System (TRS) was established in 1921, under Article 11 of the Education Law, as a method of combining various individual pension systems administered by school districts. Depending on an employee's age and service upon retirement he/she may receive a pension from the fund. In order to be eligible for Southern Westchester BOCES retirement medical benefits, outlined in the applicable employee contract/policy, an employee must be retired and be eligible to receive a pension from the New York State Teachers' Retirement System or the New York State Employees' Retirement System, and must have fulfilled the BOCES service requirements specified.
If an employee plans to retire, he/she should notify his/her immediate supervisor and the Human Resources department in writing. However, it is the employee's responsibility to contact the system and inform them of the impending retirement.
